Aim: In this study we aimed at examining the relationship between malondialdehyde (MDA), one of the end product of lipid peroxidation, and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] one of the independent risk factor for coronary heart disease.

Merials and Method: 68 patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD) were recruited into the study. These patients were divided into two groups according to their lipoprotein(a) levels. Patients in Group I (n=35) had high lipoprotein(a) levels (>30 mg/dl ) whereas patients in Group II (n=33) had normal lipoprotein(a) levels (<30 mg/dl ). Group III was composed of 24 healthy volunteers.

Results: Serum MDA levels of all subjects were measured. We found a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in MDA levels between group I and group III. MDA levels of the group II were not significantly different from group III (p>0.05) . We also found that there is a significant difference (p<0.05) between the levels of serum MDA and lipoprotein(a) in the group (I+II) (with CHD) and group III (healthy subject). In conclusion, our results suggest that there is statistically significant relationship between levels of lipoprotein(a) and MDA in CHD patients.

Conclusion: Based on these findings, it is possible to support the previous findings that antioxidant defense mechanisms are important for development of CHD. Hence, nutrients and medical drugs supporting antioxidant systems should be used to prevent development and/or progress of CHD.
