One of the most important reasons for childhood hearing lost is otitis media with effusion. Frequently isolated bacterial agents in otitis media with effusion are H. influenza, S. pneumonia and M. catarrhalis. In present sudy, effusions were collected from a total 37 ears of 20 children (aged 2 to 14 years) with myringotomy. Upon bacteriological analysis of effusions, we could not isolate any anaerob bacteria although there was growth aerob bacteria in samples from 9 ears (24.3%). In aerobic culture of the effusions, H. influenza (5.4%), S. pneumonia (13.5%) and mixed bacteria (5.4%) were isolated. When character of aspirated liquid was considered, there was a growth in 40% of mucoid, 66.6% of purulent, 8.3% of serous and 0% in glue. Bacterial growth rate was meaningfully higher in mucoid and purulent effusions compared to other effusions. In conclusion, H. influenza, S. pneumonia and M. catarrhalis have priority in bacteriological examination of effusions. These results indicating which bacteria plays role in etiology also point out the importance of antibiotics in treatments of otitis media with effusions.
