Abstract

Distraction osteogenesis is a biological process involving the formation of new bone between viable bone segments that are gradually separated by traction. Recently, this technic has been gained more popularity in treatment of craniofacial deformities. In this review, we explored the definition, history and indications of distraction osteogenesis along with the biological fundamentals and phases of this method. Moreover, advantages of maxillo-facial distraction osteogenesis than other conventional methods, complications and future prospects are other subjects of this article.
