The Lake District of southwest Anatolia has been well researched archaeologically, especially sites from pre- and protohistoric times. A vast number of settlement mounds were documented by James Mellaart who conducted archaeological field surveys in this area in the early 1950s1. The collected ceramic material was studied in detail by himself and David French who also made surveys in this region in the 1960s2. Both Mellaart’s and French’s pioneering work is still valid today, and many archaeologists use these results for their research of the prehistory of Central and Western Anatolia.
