Art is a concept with many different definitions. Ingeneral terms, it can be defined as a discipline that combines beauty withusefulness. These concepts reveal the expectations of the people for art.Throughout history, theater has been a branch of art that carries both beautyand usefulness. Since the early ages, all societies have benefited from theeducational features of theater. After the emergence of the concept ofchildhood in the West, there is a need of theater for children. Theatre forchildren emerged as a result of this need. Children have different physical andmental characteristics other than adults. Accordingly, theater for childrenshould have the characteristics appropriate for the children’s properties.Communication is a very important element for all arts. The importance ofcommunication increases when it comes to children's theatre. Children’s theatremust involve many techniques appealing to the children’s world with itsdramatic structure, fictional qualifications and pluralist expression of thecharacters. Only the theatres which are presented to the children with thementioned equipment can attract their attention and can improve theirworld.
Sanat,çok farklı tanımları olan bir kavramdır. En genel biçimde de güzel ile faydalıolanı birleştiren bir disiplin olarak tanımlanabilir. Güzel ve yararlılıkkavramları insanın sanattan beklentilerini ortaya koyar. Tiyatro da tarihboyunca hem güzeli hem de yararlı olanı taşıyan bir sanat dalı olmuştur. İlkçağlardan beri bütün toplumlar tiyatronun eğitici özelliklerindenyararlanmıştır. Batı’da çocukluk kavramının ortaya çıkmasından sonra çocuklariçin de tiyatro yapma ihtiyacı duyulur. Bu ihtiyacın sonucu olarak çocuktiyatroları doğar. Çocuk, fiziksel ve ruhsal özellikleri bakımındanyetişkinlerden farklı özellikler taşır. Bundan dolayı çocuklar için yapılantiyatronun çocuğun niteliklerine uygun özellikler taşıması gerekir. İletişimbütün sanatlar için çok önemli bir unsurdur. Söz konusu çocuk tiyatrosuolduğunda bu önem daha çok artar. Çocuk tiyatroları, dramatik örüntüsündenkurgusal özelliklerine, kişilerinden çoğulcu anlatım boyutlarına kadar çocuğundünyasına seslenen tekniklerini barındırmalıdır. Ancak bu donanımlarla çocuğunkarşısına çıkan çocuk tiyatrosu onun ilgisini çekip, dünyasını geliştirebilir.
