Ancient Greece, unlike the societies that preceded it, was not merely a society in which politics existed; it was also a society that possessed a political imagination which provided political institutions from becoming rigidly institutionalized. For this reason, although the form of citizenship in Ancient Greece encompassed only a narrow segment of the population, it nevertheless took on a highly developed institutional character. With institutional structures such as isonomia, isegoria, parrhesia, the agora, politeia, and the ecclesia, this society shaped citizenship through a political imagination oriented toward the desire for the good life. Although alongside the aristocracy, thinkers such as Aristotle and Plato adopted quite conservative attitudes toward the status of citizenship, the Sophists paved the way for reforms that expanded citizenship. Despite certain problematic practices, it seems hardly possible for contemporary political structures to attain the political meaning that citizenship possessed in Ancient Greece.
Antik Yunan, kendisinden önceki toplumların aksine sadece siyasetin olduğu bir toplum değil, aynı zamanda siyasal kurumların kurumsallaşmamasını sağlayan politik tahayyüle sahip bir toplumdu. O nedenledir ki, yurttaşlık formu Antik Yunan’da dar bir kesimi kapsıyor olmasına rağmen, gelişmişmiş bir kurumsallığa büründü. İsonomia, isegoria, parrhesia, agora, politeia, ecclesia gibi kurumsal yapıların olduğu bu toplum, yurttaşlığı iyi yaşamı arzulayan politik bir tahayyüle ulaştırdı. Aristokrasinin yanında Aristoteles ve Platon gibi düşünürler yurttaşlık konumuna karşı oldukça muhafazakar tavır alsalar da Sofistler, yurttaşlığı genişleten reformların önünü açtılar. Sahip olduğu bir takım sorunlu uygulamalara rağmen yurttaşlığın antik yunanda sahip olduğu politik anlama günümüz siyasal yapılarında ulaşılması pek mümkün görünmüyor.
