Bu makale, Georges Sorel’in modern ilerleme fikrine yönelik eleştirisini tarihsel, epistemolojik ve siyasal boyutlarıyla ele almakta ve bu eleştirinin imkânlarını ve sınırlarını tartışmaktadır. Çalışmada, Sorel’in ilerleme karşıtı tutumunun, Aydınlanma düşüncesinin rasyonalist iyimserliğine ve modernliğin kaçınılmaz gelişme anlatısına karşı, 19. yüzyıl sonu ve 20. yüzyıl başında ortaya çıkan zihniyet krizine verilen eleştirel bir yanıt olduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Sorel’in ilerleme fikrini, toplumsal eylemi pasifleştiren ve siyasal iradeyi tarihsel zorunluluk söylemine devreden bir ideolojik form olarak ele alışı, modern toplumların siyasal edilgenliğini anlamak açısından önemli bir analitik katkı sunmaktadır. Bununla birlikte makale, Sorel’in ilerleme eleştirisinin seçici bir tarih okumasına dayandığını, akıl ve bilim karşıtı vurgularla beslenen mit ve şiddet merkezli siyaset anlayışının normatif ve siyasal açıdan sorunlu sonuçlar ürettiğini savunmaktadır. Çalışma ayrıca, Sorel’in ilerleme eleştirisini günümüz neoliberal ilerleme anlatıları bağlamında değerlendirerek, bu yaklaşımın açıklayıcı gücünü kabul etmekle birlikte, demokratik ve özgürleştirici bir siyasal alternatif üretme kapasitesinin sınırlı olduğunu ileri sürmektedir.
This article examines Georges Sorel’s critique of the modern idea of progress from historical, epistemological, and political perspectives, and discusses both the possibilities and the limitations of this critique. It argues that Sorel’s opposition to the idea of progress should be understood as a critical response to the rationalist optimism of Enlightenment thought and to the modern belief in inevitable historical advancement, which emerged amid the profound intellectual crisis of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sorel’s conceptualization of progress as an ideological form that depoliticizes social actors and transfers political agency to abstract historical necessity offers an important analytical insight into the problem of political passivity in modern societies. However, the article also contends that Sorel’s critique relies on a selective reading of history and is reinforced by an anti-rationalist emphasis on myth and violence, resulting in normatively and politically problematic implications. Finally, by situating Sorel’s critique within contemporary debates on the neoliberal myth of progress, the article acknowledges its explanatory relevance while arguing that it remains limited in its capacity to provide a democratic and emancipatory political alternative.
