NEUROMYELITIS OPTICA DEVELOPİNG AFTER RECURRENT TRANSVERS MYELİTİS

Year 2016, Volume: 49 Issue: 2, 134 - 137, 01.08.2016

Abstract

Neuromyelitis optica NMO or Devic’s disease, is an idiopathic immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system mainly affecting the optic nerve and spinal cord. The main clinical characteristics of NMO are optic neuritis and transverse myelitis TM . NMO-TM is usually severe and typically longitudinally extensive TM LETM ; extending over 3 or more vertebral segments. LETM is usually associated with neuromyelitis optica NMO , but systemic autoimmune diseases Sjögren’s syndrome SS , systemic lupus erythematosus SLE , antiphospholipid syndrome, neuroinflammatory conditions Behcet’s disease, sarcoidosis , multiple sclerosis MS , and infectious diseases should always be considered. The correct diagnosis of NMO is of paramount importance for giving appropriate therapy. NMO is different from other demyelinating diseases clinically, radiologically, pathologically and in terms of treatment approaches
