Articles

The Journal is an open-access electronic journal that publishes studies with scientific qualities and aims to contribute to the scientific accumulation in the disaster's context. The Journal of Disaster and Risk uses double-blind review, which means that both the reviewer and author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa, throughout the review process.

 Disasters that cause physical, economic and social losses; natural or technological events that affect communities by stopping or interrupting normal life and human activities. The number of disasters and losses from disasters increases the importance of academic studies on this study area worldwide. The Journal of Disaster and Risk aims to be an academic platform for the evaluation of disaster-related studies in different disciplines and for sharing with the world.

The journal, which is published in Turkish and English languages twice a year (November - May), aims to publish special numbers in the current issues during the year.

The journal is on Ulakbim web portal.

Peer Review Process

All articles submitted to the journal is firstly evaluated by the editorial board and if it is suitable, it is reviewed by at least two academic reviewers chosen by the editorial board. The Journal of Disaster and Risk uses double-blind review, meaning that the identities of the reviewers and authors are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa, throughout the review process. The reviewing process of the manuscripts that are out of the Journal’s scope and not related with the subjects or not prepared in the format outlined in the author guidelines cannot be started.

 

Article Processing Charges

The Journal of Disaster and Risk does not charge any submission or processing fee.

 

Abstracting and Indexing

The Journal of Disaster and Risk is abstracted and indexed in DRJI.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION 


LANGUAGE


• Authors can prepare and submit their manuscripts for the review process in Turkish or English.


• The manuscript should be written with clear and simple sentences.



PAGE LAYOUT


• Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the sample article format.

• The page size should be A4 (210*297mm) standard.

• Manuscripts should be single-spaced and the text should be written in one column.

• Manuscripts should be prepared with the margins of 2 cm on the left and right sides and 2.5 cm on the bottom and top sides of each page.

• Manuscript should not exceed 20 pages, including the references section.

• Paragraphs should be justified.


TEXT STRUCTURE

Manuscript Title

• Manuscript title should be concise and informative and it should convey information about the topic and content of the article.


• The first letters of each word in the title should be written in capital and it should be typed as 14 points Times New Roman-bold and in the middle.


• The title in English should be written in lowercase (except the first letters of each word in the title) and placed after the abstract (in Turkish). It should also be in the middle and typed as 14 points Times New Roman-bold.


Names and Addresses of Authors


• All author names and their addresses are to be listed below the title of the manuscript. Address (affiliation) information should be given without using any abbreviation e.g.; department name, university or organization name, postal (zip) code, city, state/province (if applicable), country.



Abstract



• Abstract should present the reasons for writing the manuscript, methods, findings and outstanding conclusions concisely and informatively.

• Abstract should be written both in Turkish and English.

• The length of the abstract must be between 100 and 250 words.

• Except standard and conventional abbreviations, use of abbreviations should be avoided in the abstract. In case of abbreviation(s) is needed to be included, please define it in parenthesis where it appears in the text for the first time.

• Both title and the abstract of the manuscript written in Turkish should be translated into English and incase of manuscripts submitted in English, title and the abstract of the manuscript written in English should also be translated into Turkish.


Keywords 


• Keywords should follow the abstract and not be less than 3 and more than 6. 


Sections 

• The text of the manuscript should be designed in sections as follows; Introduction, Material and Method, Results and Discussion, Conclusions (Conclusions and Suggestions), Acknowledgements (if any), References, Appendices (if any).


• Introduction part should give the nature of the problem under investigation, main objectives of the study and method of approach accompanying relevant references of literature.


• Following sections may review on the theoretical bases of the study, the used and/or suggested methods and/or algorithms, the numerical applications, and the analyses on the provided results.


• Obtained results from the study can be summarized and suggestions can be presented in the Conclusions section.


• The institutions and associations from which the financial supports are provided, personal contacts of the authors who contribute to the manuscript can be acknowledged in the acknowledgements section. Acknowledgements should not be placed in any part of the manuscript as footnotes. Acknowledgements section should be as concise as possible.


• The text of sections should be written with Times New Roman characters in 11 points.



Numbering Sections 




• Titles and subtitles of the sections and subsections should be numerated sequentially in decimal numbers. Section numbering should not exceed three levels. The abstract should not be numbered.


(Example:  1. Introduction,  2. Main Section,  2.1. Subsection,  2.1.1. Subsection )  


Abbreviations  


• Abbreviations should be defined at the first use in parenthesis following their denotations. 



Mathematical Formulae 


• Variables, vectors and matrices are to be presented in italics. Matrices should be written in capital letter and vectors should be written in lowercase. Both, vectors and matrices should be typed as boldface.


• The equations are to be justified to the left side of the manuscript and numbered sequentially. Equation numbers should be placed next to the corresponding equation and justified to the right margin.


• In case, simple formulae in the line of text are to be inserted, formulae should be provided in text format. (e.g. for division sign; use solidus “/” instead of “–”).


• Equations must be prepared using a commonly available equation editor (e.g. Ms. Word Equation editor, MathType) to allow editing. Equations should not be included in the manuscript in graphical formats. 



Tables 


• All tables should have table captions. Table caption should be placed above the table, e.g. “Table 1. Table caption”.


• Tables should be referred to in the text as follows:


• The footnotes in the tables should be cited with superscript lowercase letters and the corresponding footnotes should be placed below the table.

• Tables in the manuscript must not be in graphical format. 


Figures 


• All figures should have figure captions. Figure caption should be placed below the figure, e.g. “Figure 1. Figure caption”.



• Figures at low resolution should be included in the manuscript. Additionally, all figures at least 300dpi resolution should be uploaded as supplementary files to the electronic system of the Journal through the online submission.


• Image title and number should not be placed on images uploaded to the online system. This information should be provided at metadata section during the uploading process. 



Table and Figure Numbering 


• Tables and figures should be numbered sequentially through the text without using any section number.

• Tables and figures in the Appendices sections must be numbered independently from the main text of the manuscript. 


Color 


• Colored illustrations, such as figures and tables can be prepared. The colored illustrations are free of charge. Approved final manuscripts in all formats will be published as colored in the Journal. 


Terminology and Units 


• Internationally accepted units and terminology standards are strongly encouraged to be followed. International system of units (SI) is requested to be used.

• If other units are mentioned, their equivalent in SI should be enclosed in parenthesis. 


Footnotes 


• To indicate additional information, footnotes can be included. Footnotes on the text should be cited in decimal numbers and formatted as superscript.

• Footnotes as usual should be written at the bottom of the page where the referenced text is placed on. 


Citations and Quotations 


APA 6th - Referencing and Citation Styles is used.


Publication Ethics

The Journal of Disaster and Risk uses the iThenticate software to determining for plagiarism in the text of submitted manuscripts. If the similarity ratio detected before publication exceeds 20%, the article is rejected before the referee evaluation process is initiated. Even if a manuscript is below %20, it will be declined if it breaches the academic code of conduct by intentional misuse of references, wrong citations and other forms of plagiarism.

The author(s) must pay regard to the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) recommendations and COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) standards.

Authors who submit papers to The Journal of Disaster and Risk certify that his or her work is original and is not published or under publication consideration elsewhere. In addition, authors confirm that submitted papers have not been copied or plagiarized, in whole or in part, from other papers or studies. Authors certify that he or she does not have potential conflicts of interest or partial benefits associated with his or her papers. Submitting authors must confirm the following:

Submitting authors must confirm the following:
1. Manuscripts must be the original work of the submitting author.
2. Submitted manuscripts must be unpublished and it should not contain any information that has already been published.
3. Any facts that might be perceived as a possible conflict of interest of the author(s) must be disclosed in the paper prior to submission.
4. Authors should cite all data sources used in the preparation of the manuscript.
5. Authors should accurately present their research findings and include an objective discussion of the significance of their findings.
6. Data and methods used in the research need to be presented in sufficient detail in the paper, so that other researchers can replicate the work.
7. Authors need to at least have the raw data readily available for presentation to the referees and the editors of the journal, if requested.
8. Republishing content that is not novel is not tolerated (for example, an English translation of a paper that is already published in another language will not be accepted).
9. If errors and inaccuracies are found by the authors after publication of their paper, they need to be promptly communicated to the editors of this journal so that appropriate actions can be taken.
10. Plagiarism, data fabrication and image manipulation are not tolerated.

Please note: It is unethical to submit a manuscript to more than one journal concurrently.

Reviewers must confirm the following:
1. Manuscripts are reviewed fairly based on the intellectual content of the paper regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, citizenship or political view of the author(s).
2. Any observed conflict of interest during the review process must be sent to the editor.
3. Information pertaining to the manuscript is kept confidential.
4. Information that may be a cause for rejection of publication must be sent to the editor.

Editors must confirm the following:
1. Manuscripts are reviewed fairly based on the intellectual content of the paper regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, citizenship or political view of the author(s).
2. Information pertaining to manuscripts is kept confidential.
3. Any observed conflict of interest pertaining manuscripts must be disclosed.


Publication Principles and Guidelines

• The Journal of Disaster and Risk uses the iThenticate software to determining for plagiarism in the text of submitted manuscripts. If the similarity ratio detected before publication exceeds 20%, the article is rejected before the referee evaluation process is initiated (Publication Ethics)

• Scientific articles that come from various areas of research in disaster and risk are published in the journal.

• Articles submitted to the journal are accepted in Turkish or English.

• The review and evaluation process of submitted articles is carried out by the "Double Blind Peer-Reviewed" method (referees and authors are prevented from seeing each other's information).

• The journal adopts the Open Source Publishing Policy.

• There is no charge for publishing articles and accessing published articles in the journal. No fees are paid to the authors and referees for articles accepted for publication.

• The article review process in the journal is foreseen to continue no more than 6 months for each article, depending on the referee evaluations.

• In case of a “Correction” decision for a submitted article, the authors must make the necessary corrections within 15 days and upload the final form of the article to the journal system. The editor reserves the right to reject the article unless the author sends the final edited article within the specified time.

• The articles sent to the journal should not have been published or sent for publication in anywhere else.

• If the submitted article consists of previous work such as a thesis, presentation or conference paper, there should be footnotes on the first page in accordance with the following conditions.

- If the study is published as an abstract; title, date and place of the study should be written.

- If the study is produced from graduate theses; the name of the thesis, the name of the advisor, the university and institute information, the date of completion and the location should be written.

- If the study is supported by a research institution or fund; the name of the organization providing the support, the project number, and the date of completion should be written.

- Distinguished event information should be written for articles produced from presented and then partly published studies outside of the specified conditions.

• Before submitting the submitted articles to the referees, the following points are considered and then the eligible articles are sent to the referees for review process:

- Compliance with the writing rules

- Compliance with formal template

- Compliance with aim and scope

- Compliance with publishing guidelines

- Compliance with publication ethics

- Scientific quality and originality



• An article is evaluated by at least 2 referees. If an article is rejected for publication by a referee, then article is evaluated by third referee. The article must have the approval of at least 2 referees as a prerequisite for acceptance. After the approval of the arbitrators, the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board have the power to decide whether or not to publish the article.



• All authors who submit articles to Journal of Disaster and Risk have equal rights. No privilege is given to any study or author in the evaluation, acceptance and publication processes of the articles. The published order of accepted articles is set according to the admission time. However, the Editorial Board reserves the right to make changes when necessary.

• Once an article has been accepted for publication, the "Copyright Agreement Form" must be completed and signed by all authors and uploaded to the journal system.

• The articles accepted for publication are published by Journal of Disaster and Risk with all publishing rights.
