Effectiveness of Lavender Oil in Headache Management: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Aim: This systematic review aimed to examine randomized controlled clinical trials regarding the efficacy of lavender oil in headache management. Method: While performing this systematic review, was adhered to the Cochrane guidelines. The studies published in the English language were searched on the Science Direct, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Ulakbim, CINAHL Complete, Pubmed, and Cochrane library databases, with no year limitation. The keywords were “lavender, lavandula, headache, migraine, head pain” and combinations thereof. The relevant studies were assessed for risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool (Rob2).Results: Three studies identified on the effects of lavender application on headache, with sample sizes ranging from 47 to 60. In one of the intervention studies, ten drops of lavender oil were dripped into water and given to participants as a drink. In the other two studies, two to three drops of lavender oil were applied on the upper lip by inhalation. One of the studies used the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) and the other two the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). All studies reported that applying lavender was an effective approach for reducing headache complaints, headache frequency, headache severity, and accompanying symptoms. Conclusion: Within the scope of the studies included in this systematic review, it was concluded that lavender oil is an effective approach in the management of migraine headaches and postdural puncture headaches. However, more strong evidence is needed in this regard. It is recommended to conduct more studies with a well-designed method examining the effects of lavender oil on different types of headache management.

Baş Ağrısı Yönetiminde Lavanta Yağının Etkinliği: Sistematik Derleme

Abstract

Amaç: Bu sistematik derlemede, randomize kontrollü çalışmalarda baş ağrısı yönetiminde lavanta yağının etkinliğinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem:  Sistematik derleme, Cochrane kılavuzuna göre randomize kontrollü çalışmaların sistematik bir incelemesiyle hazırlanarak sunulmuştur. İngilizce dilinde yayınlanan çalışmalar yıl sınırlaması olmaksızın Science Direct, Embase, Web of Science,
Scopus, Ulakbim, CINAHL Complete, Pubmed ve Cochrane library veri tabanları arasında taranmıştır. Taramada MESH terimlerine uygun olan “lavender, lavandula, headache, migraine, head pain” anahtar kelimeleri ve kombinasyonları kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaların yanlılık riski, her iki yazar tarafından Cochrane Yanlılık Riski Değerlendirme Aracı (Rob 2) ile değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Lavanta uygulamasının baş ağrısı üzerindeki etkisinin incelendiği üç çalışma belirlenmiştir. Dahil edilen çalışmaların örneklem sayısı 47-60 arasındadır. Müdahale çalışmalarından birinde on damla lavanta yağı suya damlatılıp içirilerek, diğer ikisinde ise iki- üç damla üst dudağa damlatılarak inhalasyon yöntemleri ile uygulanmıştır. Bir çalışmada değerlendirme Migren Özürlülük Değerlendirilmesi Ölçeği (MIDAS), diğer ikisinde ise Vizuel Analog Skala (VAS) ile yapılmıştır. Çalışmalarda lavanta uygulamasının baş ağrısının sıklığını, şiddetini ve eşlik eden semptomları azaltmada etkili bir yaklaşım olduğu bildirilmiştir. Sonuç: Bu sistematik derlemeye dahil edilen çalışmalar kapsamında, lavanta yağının migren tipi baş ağrısı ve dural ponksiyon sonrası gelişen baş ağrısı yönetiminde etkili bir yaklaşım olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Ancak, bu konuda daha fazla güçlü kanıtlara gereksinim vardır. Lavanta yağının farklı tipteki baş ağrısı yönetimine etkilerinin incelendiği yöntemi iyi tasarlanmış daha fazla sayıda çalışma yapılması önerilmektedir.
