Abstract

Digital Music Industry and Global Climate Change: The Case of Spotify

Year 2023, Volume: 9 Issue: 2, 337 - 362, 31.10.2023
https://doi.org/10.31463/aicusbed.1350124

Abstract

Global climate change is mostly caused by changes in temperature and weather conditions as a result of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities. This process has been accelerated by rapidly increasing carbon emissions due to unsustainable energy use, consumption and production patterns that emerged especially after the industrialization period. In recent years, many studies have been conducted on the effects of the music industry, which accounts for approximately 17.2% of the global trade volume, on climate change and international agreements have been signed in this field. Presently, the music industry is undergoing a significant shift towards digitalization. Studies show that with the development of the digital music industry, carbon emissions have decreased in the production and distribution processes, but the situation has gone in the opposite direction in the consumption process and carbon emissions have increased rapidly due to streaming consumption. This study will examine the impact of Spotify, one of the world's leading music streaming platforms, on climate change due to the company's business activities and its efforts to mitigate this impact through the sustainability reports published between 2017 and 2022. The study is considered to be important for understanding the role of the digital music industry in climate change and developing sustainability-oriented solutions.
