Ortaokul Öğrencilerinin FeTeMM’e Yönelik Tutumlarının ve FeTeMM Mesleklerine Yönelik İlgilerinin İncelenmesi

Year 2018, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 40 - 62, 20.12.2018

Abstract

Investigation of Secondary School Students’ Attitudes Towards STEM and Their Interest Towards Professions in STEM Fields

Year 2018, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 40 - 62, 20.12.2018

Abstract

Determination of students’ attitudes towards STEM and their interest towards professions in STEM fields
can be a guiding factor for their future choices of profession and career preferences. This research was
carried out to determine secondary school students’ attitudes towards STEM and their interest towards professions in STEM fields, on the basis of various variables to reveal the relationship between them.
Relational screening model, among quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The research
population consists of secondary school students within the boundaries of Adilcevaz District of Bitlis
Province, and the sample consists of 436 students receiving education in these schools. The Questionnaire
on Interest in Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering Professions and the Questionnaire on
Attitude towards STEM were used as the data collection tools. The analysis of quantitave data obtained
from the questionnaires was performed using statistical package program. In the research, the
participating students’ attitudes towards STEM were found to be at a “positive” level. In the research, no
significant correlation was found between the students’ STEM attitudes and their gender, grade levels, the
locations of their schools. In the research, the students’ interest levels towards the professions in STEM
fields were found to be at a “positive” level. A significant relationship was detected between the students’
interest towards professions in STEM fields and their grade levels. No significant relationship was
detected between their interest towards professions in STEM fields and their gender, the locations of their
schools. It was found that there is a high positive relationship between the students’ STEM attitude scores
and their scores of interest towards professions in STEM fields. Suggestions were made based on the
results of the study.
