In his Monadology, G. W. Leibniz defined the smallest entity that represents a microcosm of the entirety as a “monad”. Monad, characterized by its lack of windows and indivisibility, compels the separation between “inside” and “outside”. Although originally a metaphysical concept, this term became applicable to sociological explanations through Gabriel de Tarde and was further contextualized by Gilles Deleuze. The first part of the study examines the windows of Aşk-ı Memnu, revealing that the windows embody a significance that reinforces this monadic closure. The windows do not open to nature or to the external world, but rather to the internal realms of the characters. The observation prompts a subsequent inquiry into the language and stylistic preference of Edebiyat-ı Cedide. According to Deleuze, a “fold” is essential for differentiating between the “inside” and the “outside”. Halit Ziya's realist perspective, the oppression of Istibdat, and cultural disjunction generate conflicting tensions. The juncture at which the conflicting pressures of the inside and outside are experienced is language, thus the language and stylicstic preferences in Edebiyat-ı Cedide transcends mere aesthetic choice. This study examines the fictional windows of Aşk-ı Memnu and subsequently seeks to provide a monadic elucidation of the psychodynamics of Edebiyat-ı Cedide, grounded in socio-cultural facts and the perspectives of Edebiyat-ı Cedide members on language and style.
G.W. Leibniz töz anlayışını açıkladığı Monadoloji’de bir bütünün mikrokozmosu hâline gelebilen en küçük parçayı “monad” olarak kavramsallaştırmıştır. Penceresiz oluşu ve bölünemezliğiyle içeri/dışarı ayrımını zorunlu kılan “monad”, bir metafizik terim olmasına rağmen Gabriel de Tarde ile sosyolojik izahlar için uygun hâle gelmiş ve Gilles Deleuze’ün görüşleriyle bağlamını genişletmiştir. Kapalı bir mekânda geçen Aşk-ı Memnu ise toplumsal sorunlardan yalıtılmışlığı ve pencerelerinin niteliğiyle monadik bir okuma için elverişli bir yapıya sahiptir. Bu çalışmanın ilk bölümünde Aşk-ı Memnu’nun pencerelerine odaklanılmış ve böylece romandaki pencerelerin bu kapanmayı destekleyen bir anlam kazandığı tespit edilmiştir: Pencereler doğaya/dünyaya değil, karakterlerin iç dünyalarına açılır. Bu gözlem, Edebiyat-ı Cedide’nin dil tercihine dair ikinci bir sorgulamayı da beraberinde getirir. Nitekim “içeri”, varoluşu gereği “dışarı”yı da mecbur kılar ve Deleuze’e göre bu ikisi arasındaki ayrımı sağlayan bir “kıvrım” gerekir. Halit Ziya’nın realist tutumu ile İstibdat baskısı ve kültürel kopuş, karşıt yönlü baskılar oluşturur. İçeri ve dışarı arasındaki bu iki baskının hissedildiği ayrım noktası ise dildir ve Edebiyat-ı Cedide’nin lisan tercihi estetik bir tercihten fazlasını ifade eder. Bu nedenle, öncelikle Aşk-ı Memnu’nun pencerelerine odaklanan bu çalışma, sonrasında Edebiyat-ı Cedide’nin psikodinamiği, sosyo-kültürel veriler ve Edebiyat-ı Cedide mensuplarının lisana dair görüşlerinden hareketle Aşk-ı Memnu’ya dair monadik bir açıklama denemesi sunmayı amaçlamaktadır.
