Abstract

Shaun Tan’s The Arrival, a silent graphic novel, narrates the migrant experience through a purely visual language, devoid of words. This study examines how the concepts of time and space are transformed into narrative tools within the work. While time is portrayed not as a linear progression but as a fragile, fragmented, and cyclical structure, space is shaped by themes of alienation, the search for belonging, and identity crisis.Tan masterfully employs visual elements—from panel arrangements to color transitions, and from symbols to metaphors—to immerse readers into the story. Silence here is not an absence but a dialogue where readers fill gaps with their own experiences, co-constructing meaning. The study not only highlights The Arrival’s success in creating a universal visual language but also sheds light on the interdisciplinary potential of visual narratives.

DİSİPLİNLERARASI BİR PERSPEKTİFLE SESSİZLİK, ZAMAN VE MEKÂN: SHAUN TAN’İN THE ARRIVAL’INDA ANLATI EVRENİNİN İNŞASI

Year 2025, Volume: 19 Issue: 36, 253 - 276, 30.07.2025

Abstract

Shaun Tan’ın The Arrival adlı sessiz grafik romanı, göçmenlik deneyimini kelimelere ihtiyaç duymadan, tamamen görsel bir dille anlatmaktadır.
