Chip seals (CS) are
one of the mostly used asphalt pavement type because of the advantages of low
cost, rapidly construct and opened to traffic, high friction and smooth surface
properties and etc. It is widely used construct on compacted granular base in countries
such as Turkey, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, England etc. Especially
in Turkey, 39 333 km of 67 333 km highway network is formed by chip sealed road
pavement. CS is a pavement method which is used also to preventive and
maintenance purposes for hot mix asphalt pavements. Performance of chip seals
on unbound granular base can be affected by a lot of factors before and after
the construction different from hot mix asphalt pavements. Different
construction techniques are available in literature for chip sealed road
pavements. However single or double layer chip seal applications widely
preferred in Turkey. Adhesion between aggregate and bitumen in chip seal
applications are significantly affected by many factors such as traffic volume
of roads, location of roads, nominal dimension of chips, construction method and
etc. In this study, the effect of heating of aggregates by using three
different types of aggregates and two different binders on CS adhesion
performance was investigated by Vialit adhesion and Nicholson stripping tests. The
results show that the CS application with heated aggregate improves the
adhesion performance.
