Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarından itibaren ekonomide Türklerin, azınlıkların ve yabancıların yerini alması hükümetin hedeflerinden birisi olmuştur. Bununla birlikte Atatürk döneminde bir millileştirme politikası ile hareket edilerek birçok alanda yabancıların elinde olan şirketler satın alınmıştır. Bu şirketlerin satın alınmasında güvenlik kaygılarıyla birlikte bazı işletmeler hakkında oluşan yolsuzluk iddiaları da rol oynamıştır. Bundan başka bu işletmelerin şehirlere hizmet hususunda yetersiz kaldıkları, şehir halkına hizmet için gerekli özeni göstermedikleri ve tesisatlarım bakım ve gelişimini yeterince önemsemedikleri mazbatalardan anlaşılmaktadır. Milletvekilleri yaptıkları konuşmalarda yabancılara verilen bu imtiyazların ülkede Türkleri ikinci sınıf konumuna düşürdüğüne dikkat çekmiştir. Bazı milletvekilleri bu imtiyazları kapitülasyonların bir türevi olarak gördüğünü meclis kürsüsünden ifade etmiştir. Vekiller bu müesseselerin Türk’ün yararına çalışmaktan çok yabancı hükümetlerin faydasını temin için uğraştıklarını, Türk işçi çalıştırmak yerine yabancıları işe alarak Türk Milletinin adı geçen alanlarda uzman yetiştirmesini de engellediklerini iddia etmiştir. Hükümet, bahsi geçen işletmeleri mümkün olduğunca ucuza alarak ekonomik açıdan bütçeye yük olmasını engellemek istemiştir. Atatürk döneminde telefon ve elektrik sektöründe İstanbul ve İzmir şirketleri satın alınmıştır. Diğer yandan Haydarpaşa, İzmir ve İstanbul rıhtımlarının alınmasıyla millileştirmede önemli adımlar atılmıştır. Bu dönemde rıhtım, elektrik ve telefon haricinde demiryolları ve maden işletmeleri de satın alınmıştır. Gazetelerin de bu satın alımları çoğu zaman birinci sayfada haber olarak yer verdikleri görülmektedir. Basının millileştirme hamlelerine genel itibariyle olumlu bir bakış açısı ortaya koyduğu söylenebilir.
Since the first years of the Republic, the replacement of Turks, minorities and foreigners in the economy has been one of the goals of the government. However, in the Atatürk period, companies that were in the hands of foreigners in many areas were purchased by acting with a nationalization policy. Along with security concerns, corruption allegations against some businesses also played a role in the acquisition of these companies. In addition, it is understood from the certificates that these enterprises are inadequate in terms of serving the cities, that they do not show the necessary care to serve the people of the city, and that they do not care enough about the maintenance and development of their installations. In their speeches, the deputies drew attention to the fact that these privileges given to foreigners made the Turks a second class position in the country. Some deputies stated from the parliamentary rostrum that they see these privileges as a derivative of capitulations. The deputies claimed that these institutions were trying to provide the benefit of foreign governments rather than working for the benefit of the Turks, and they also prevented the Turkish Nation from raising experts in the aforementioned fields by hiring foreigners instead of hiring Turkish workers. The government wanted to buy the aforementioned businesses as cheaply as possible and prevent them from being an economic burden on the budget. Istanbul and Izmir companies were purchased in the telephone and electricity sector during the Atatürk period. On the other hand, important steps were taken in nationalization with the acquisition of Haydarpaşa, İzmir and İstanbul berths. During this period, railways and mining enterprises were purchased, in addition to the quay, electricity and telephone. It is seen that newspapers often place these purchases as news on the first page. It can be said that the press has a generally positive perspective on nationalization moves.
