OVERVIEW OF SOCIAL CAPITAL IN CAPITALISM: A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT

Abstract

Commodification, which started with the Industrial Revolution, led to deterioration in the relationship of communication and trust between people. It has been frequently discussed under social capital recently, upon the determination that these deteriorations in communication also damage economic activities. Discussions focused on economic activities; It has left in the dark the essential issues such as why social capital is important from a holistic point of view and what its limitations are. The study was created to draw attention to these neglected aspects of social capital. In this direction, social capital has been analyzed through Polanyi's determinations regarding the capitalist system, and the studies in the literature have been examined accordingly. In the light of Polanyi's analysis and the information obtained from the literature, the lack of the social aspect of social capital research has been criticized. The deficiency is connected to the natural working mechanism of the capitalist system. Recommendations were also made on the role of policy makers in this process.

KAPİTALİST SİSTEMDE SOSYAL SERMAYEYE BAKIŞ: ELEŞTİREL BİR DEĞERLENDİRME

Abstract

Sanayi Devrimi’yle başlayan metalaşma, insanlar arasındaki iletişim ve güven ilişkisinde bozulmalara yol açmıştır. İletişimde yaşanan bu bozulmaların ekonomik faaliyetlere de zarar verdiği tespiti ile son zamanlarda sosyal sermaye altında sıklıkla tartışılmaktadır. Tartışmaların ekonomik faaliyetler üzerine odaklanmış olması; sosyal sermayenin bütünsel açıdan neden önemli olduğu, sınırlılıkların neler olduğu gibi aslını ilgilendiren konuları karanlıkta bırakmıştır. Çalışma, toplum düzeninin doğru zeminler üzerine oturmasında kritik öneme sahip olan sosyal sermayenin ihmal edilen bu yönlerine dikkat çekmek amacıyla oluşturulmuştur. Bu doğrultuda Polanyi’nin kapitalist sisteme ilişkin tespitleri üzerinden sosyal sermaye analiz edilmiş, literatürde yer alan çalışmalar buna uygun şekilde incelenmiştir. Polanyi’nin analizi ve literatürden elde edilen bilgiler ışığında, sosyal sermaye araştırmalarının toplumsal yönünün eksikliği kritik edilmiştir. Eksiklik, kapitalist sistemin doğal işleyiş mekanizmasına bağlanmıştır. Bu süreçte politika yapıcıların rolü üzerine de tavsiyelerde bulunulmuştur.
