The effects of synovectomy on joint cartilage destruction were investigated by late term experimental septic arthritis in 30 New Zeland rabbits. Antibiotic treatment was begun on the sixth day after staphylococcus aureus inoculation in to the knee joint in all groups. In addition to antibiotic treatment in Group II drainage and in Group III drainage, synovectomy were performed. Antibiotic treatment was given for 3 weeks At the end of 6 weeks cartilage and synovial samples were examined according to Salter s histological grading system. Histologically, statistically significant cartilage destruction was found in the group which was treated with antibiotics. Statistically no significant differences were found between the groups II and III.
Geç dönemde yapılan sinovektominin eklem kıkırdak harabiyeti üzerindeki etkilerini araştırmak amacıyla; her bir grupta 10'ar adet olmak üzere 3 gruba ayrılan 30 adet Yeni Zelanda tavşanında deneysel septik artrit oluşturuldu. Yapılan histolojik değerlendirme sonucunda tek başına antibiotik tedavisi uygulanan Grup I'de diğer gruplara oranla istatistiksel yönden önemli olan aşın oranda kıkırdak harabiyeti gözlendi, Geç dönemde yapılan sinovektominin (Grup III), istatistiki olarak eklem kıkırdak harabiyetini önleme açısından drenaja (Grup II) üstünlük sağlamadığı, her iki grupta da benzer oranda kıkırdak harabiyetinin geliştiği saptandı.
