Late reconstruction of lateral ankle ligaments with Colville’s technique

Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated the results of Colville’s technique in young active patients with chronic lateral ankle instability.
Methods: Between 1993 and 1996, reconstruction of lateral ankle ligaments with Colville’s augmented technique was performed in six male patients (mean age 25, range 20-35 years) with chronic lateral ankle instability. The interval between injury and operation ranged from 18 months to 32 months (mean 25 months). According to Trevino’s classification system, all patients had grade IIIc lateral ankle injuries. Mean follow-up was 20 months (range 14-32 months).
Results: We achieved excellent results in all patients. None of the patients developed recurrent instability. No complications such as infection, skin loss, and sural-nerve injury were encountered.
Conclusion: By means of Colville’s technique, a stability of nearly 100% can be obtained, with preservation of subtalar joint motions.

Abstract

Amaç: Ayak bileği lateral bağlarınm kronik instabilitelerinde Colville tekniğinin aktif spor ve eğitim uygulanan genç hastalardaki sonuçları değerlendirildi.
Çalışma planı: Kliniğimizde 1993-1996 yılları arasinda kronik ayak bileği lateral instabilitesi olan altı erkek hastaya (ort. Yaş 25; yaş dağılımı 20-35) güçlendirilmiş Colville tekniğiyle rekonstrüksiyon uygulandı. Yaralanmadan ameliyata kadar geçen süre ortalama 25 ay idi (dağılım 18-32 ay). Altı hastada da Trevino'nun değerlendirme kriterlerine göre tip IIIc ayak bileği lateral bağ lezyonu vardı. Olgular ortalama 20 ay süreyle (dağılım 14-32 ay) takip edildi.
Sonuçlar: Tüm olgularda mükemmel sonuç elde edildi. Hiçbir hastada rekürent instabilite gözlenmedi. Enfeksiyon, yara yerinde iyileşmeme, sural sinir lezyonu gibi tomplikasyonlara rastlanmadı.
Çıkarımlar: Colville tekniğiyle, stabilite %100'e yakın oranlarda sağlanırken, subtalar eklem hareketleri de korunmaktadır.
