The incidence of radiographic lumbar spine abnormalities in 1500 asymptomatic military school candidates

Year 2001, Volume: 35 Issue: 2, 130 - 134, 11.09.2006

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of lumbar spine abnormalities in adolescents using anteroposterior radiographs.
Methods: Lumbar anteroposterior radiographs of 1500 military school candidates were evaluated for detection of lumbar spine abnormalities. All candidates were males with a mean age of 17 years (range 14-19 years). Radiologically, scoliosis, transitional vertebra and spina bifida occulta were sought.
Results: Radiological changes in the lumbar spine were noted in 351 radiographs of 323 cases (21.5%), which included sacralization in 4.9% (n=73), lumbalization in 0.6% (n=9), lumbar scoliosis in 3.3% (n=50), spina bifida occulta in 14.3% (n=215), and hemivertebra in 0.27% (n=4).
Conclusion: The study provided important data to be used in further studies concerning the incidence of lumbar spine abnormalities in asymptomatic adolescents.

Asemptomatik askeri öğrenci adaylarında radyografik lomber omurga anomalileri: 1500 olguda sıklık araştırılması

Year 2001, Volume: 35 Issue: 2, 130 - 134, 11.09.2006

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı radyolojik incelemeyle genç nüfusta lomber spinal defonnitelerin sıklığının saptanmasıdır.
Çalışma planı: Radyolojik incelemeler 1500 asemptomatik askeri öğrenci adayına yapıldı. Olgular lomber vertebralar ve sakral bölgeyi içeren ön-arka direkt grafi çekilerek incelendi. Tümü erkek olan olguların yaş ortalamasi 17 idi (dağılım 14-19). Skolyoz, geçiş vertebra ve spina bifida occulta araştırıldı.
Sonuçlar: Olguların 323'ünde (%21.5) toplam 351 radyolojik anomali saptandı. Yetmiş üç olguda (%4.9) sakralizasyon, dokuz olguda (%0.6) lumbalizasyon, 50 olguda (%3.3) lomber skolyoz, 215 olguda (%14.3) spina bifida occulta ve dört olguda (%0.27) hemivertebra izlendi.
Çıkarımlar: Çalişmamiz, semptomsuz genç yaş grubunda lomber radyolojik anomalilerin sıklığı konusunda daha ileri karşılaştırmalı çalişmalara önemli bilgiler sağlamıştır.
