<p>Arab-Christianintellectuals have a significant place in the intellectual life of the OttomanEmpire. Arab language has emerged as the center of the Arabic thought, whichevolved into Arab nationalism in the early 20th Century. Ahmad Farisal-Shidyaq, being a Lebanese/Moranite intellectual, was one of the pioneers ofArab modernism, and was well-known for his studies on Arabic literature andlinguistics. Shidyaq underlined the significance of Muslim/Christianco-existence in the Ottoman lands in his autobiographical travel book “al-Saq&#039;ala Saq fi ma Huwa&#039;l-Faryaq/Leg overLeg or Turtle in the Tree”. His autobiography was based upon hisobservations from his travels, from Ottoman lands to Europe and Britain. Whenhis life story and his studies were considered, Shidyaq was an Arab intellectual. On the other hand, he was a modernist Ottoman intellectual when he wasconsidered in a broader context. In our study, this specific framework isemphasized, based on the examples from the author’s autobiography Saq ala Saq.</p></trans-abstract>
