Readability is one of the criteria used to determine whether a text is appropriate for the target audience. In line with this criterion, this study, which aims to determine the readability levels of free reading texts in secondary school Turkish textbooks, was carried out following the descriptive survey model. The study material consists of the 5, 6, 7 and 8th-grade textbooks used in the 2021-2022 academic year. The data of the study were evaluated by examining them with descriptive analysis. In this respect, the free reading texts in the four books that are the object of examination of the research were examined and interpreted within the framework of the pre-determined themes. In the analysis of the data obtained from the texts, the readability formula adapted from Flesch by Ateşman (1997) was used. According to the results of the research, it was determined that the readability of the free reading texts in the 5th-grade classes was between easy and intermediate, and the free reading texts in the 6th-grade courses were found to be very easy, easy and intermediate, the readability levels of the free reading texts in the 7th-grade textbook were easy to intermediate difficulty, and the readability levels of the free reading texts in the 8th-grade textbook were easy. In terms of text types, it was seen that the readability levels of both narrative texts and informative texts were easy, while one of the poetry type texts was very easy and the others were easy. When the free reading texts are examined in terms of their convenience to the theme they are in, it was seen that the texts adequately represent the theme. As a result of the research, it is recommended to conduct studies to obtain the readability criteria in poetry-type texts and to obtain the opinions of teachers and students about the free reading texts in Turkish textbooks.
