Nakiye Elgün is one of the oldest educators of our country. She is also one of the first women politicians of Turkish Republic besides being in charge at so many charity organizations during constitutional monarchy the second, armistice and republic. Nakiye Elgün who was born in 1882 in İstanbul graduated from Darulmuallimat (Teaching Faculity of Girls) and worked and five different schools as teacher, vise principal and manager. Through her contemporary views in comparison with the age she lived, she aimed to bring up students who were different from the traditional education. Apart from constitutional monarchy the second, era woman movement, Nakiye Elgün, who lived education and social life in an interrelated way, also played a major role all her life in many institutions activating in social, aconomic and political domains. Miss. Elgün who took a step into politics by quitting her education job in 1930 became permanent committee member of İstanbul City Council between 1930-1935. She served as Erzurum deputy by being elected from CHP during three terms at parliament till 1946 after the political rights were given to women
Nakiye Elgün, ülkemizin en eski eğitimcilerinden biridir. II. Meşrutiyet, mütareke ve cumhuriyet dönemlerinde farklı okullarda çalışmış, birçok yardım cemiyetinde görev almıştır. Aynı zamanda cumhuriyetimizin ilk kadın siyasetçilerindendir.
1882’de İstanbul’da doğan Nakiye Elgün, Dârulmuallimât’tan mezun olduktan sonra, İstanbul’da beş ayrı okulda öğretmenlik, müdür muavinliği ve müdürlük yapmıştır. Yaşadığı dönemdeki çağdaş fikirleriyle, geleneksel eğitim anlayışından farklı tarzda öğrenciler yetiştirmeyi amaçlamıştır. Maarif ve cemiyet hayatını dopdolu yaşayan Nakiye Elgün, II. Meşrutiyet dönemi kadın hareketi içerisinde yer almasının yanı sıra, hayatı boyunca içtimai, iktisadi ve siyasi alanda faaliyet gösteren birçok cemiyette aktif olarak rol oynamıştır. Eğitim görevini bırakıp 1930’da siyasete atılan Nakiye Hanım, 1930-1935 yılları arasında İstanbul Şehir Meclisi Daimi Encümen Üyeliği’nde bulunmuştur. Kadınlara siyasi haklar verildikten sonra, 1935’te CHP’den milletvekili seçilerek 1946 yılına kadar mecliste üç dönem boyunca Erzurum milletvekili olarak görev yapmıştır.
