Engelliler şemsiyesi altındaki bireyler içinde ağız ve diş sağlığı hizmetlerinden yararlanma açısından en dezavantajlı grubu zihinsel engelliler oluşturur. Normal popülasyonla kıyaslandığında, engelli bireyler daha fazla oral-dental problemlere sahip olmalarına rağmen daha düşük seviyelerde ağız diş sağlığı hizmeti almaktadırlar. Özellikle genetik etyolojiye bağlı gelişen mental retardasyon olgularında, koordinasyon güçlüğü nedeniyle sunulmasında engellerle karşılaşılabilmektedir. Mental diş
