Ultraviolet rays (Ultraviolet radiation!) were first observed in 1801 by Johann Wilhelm Ritter, a German physicist, who discovered the existence of violet rays in the silver spectrum and some of their effects with experiments using silver chloride (— silver chloride!l and prisma. In 1901, Peter Cooper Hewitt artificially obtained ultraviolet rays by passing a strong electric current through a quartz tube filled with mercury vapor (1). Later, (a) Near - Ultraviolet Lamps, (b) Middie - Ultraviolet Lamps and (o) Far - Ultraviolet Lamp types were made (2). It is known that ultraviolet rays are effective on human health, play a role in pigmentation in the skin, convert ergosterol into vitamin D, and are also used as a germ killer and have applications in technology.
</trans-abstract>
