<p>Hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) was tested with the method of Conter-İmmunelectrophoresis on 1200 healthy and unpaid Turkish blood donors in the city of Ankara and in 38 (3.16%) it was found to be positive. With this percentage of prevalence, Turkey falls within the 1-5% bracket in which many middle Eastern and South European countries take place. This figure compared with many advanced European and North American population, shows that Turkish blood donors harbour 10-30 times more HB Ag. Our findings are discussed with the results of two other groups of Turkish investigators who also studied the same problem and found the HB Ag prevalence of 3.0 p.c. and 1.7 p.c. respectively using Agargel diffusion technique.Taking into view that 50-75 p.c. of the receivers of HB Ag positive blood develop icteric or anicteric hepatitis, the necessity of discarding such blood units is emphasized. The pertaining world literature is reviewed and the production of Hepatitis B by tranfusion, the problem of careers and the way and means of prevention are discussed. Also preventive measure to be taken in the transfusion services and the laborratories dealing with blood and blood products are outlined.</p></trans-abstract>
