<p>In this paper, we present the resuts of a study of Hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) with Counterimmunoelectrophoresis in a series of 104 cases composed of 31 cryptogenic liver cirrhosis, 49 chronic active hepatitis, and 31 cases with a history of hepatitis in the past ten years. Besides, the findings in 17 cases of acute viral hepatitis are also submitted. In a previous study, we had determined the prevalence of HB Ag&#039;in Turkish blood donors as 3.16 p.c, whereas in acute viral hepatitis it was 41.1 p.c. In the present study, HB Ag positivity ratios were as follows: In chronic active hepatitis 16/49 (32.6 p.c.), and out of this group, in agressive hepatitis 12/35 (34.3 p.c.), in persistant hepatitis 4/14 (28.5 p.c.). Our findings indicate that, HB infection plays an important role in the etiology of acute viral hepatitis and in the development of chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. Previously, in a retrospective etiologic study of 220 cases of liver cirrhosis, we have shown that, cryptogenic cases constitutes the major part of the series (47 p.c.). Therefore the importance of prevention of hepatitis B infection by means of education and sanitary measures, and also, by discarding the HB Ag positive blood and blood products are emphasized.</p></trans-abstract>

Buna karşılık 17 akut viral hepatitiste 7 vakada (% 41.1) HB Ag&#039;i görülürken, kronik aktif hepatitiste 16/49 (%326) ve bu dizideki 35 agresif hepatitiste 12/35 (% 34.3), 14 persistan hepatitiste 4/14 (% 28.5) HB Ag&#039;i pozitiftir.
