Chylothorax can occur after direct injury to the thoracic duct, blunt thoracic trauma, or surgery to the thorax. A spontaneously occurring chylothorax requires a thorough etiological explanation and treatment of the underlying condition. The goals of conservative treatment are to seal the injury site in the thoracic duct and restore normal chylus flow. The crucial issue is determining the duration of conservative treatment. Symptomatic treatment with pleural puncture is recommended, provided the duration is not prolonged. Surgical treatment involves the placement of a ligature at the site of injury in the thoracic duct, which is successful.

Chylothorax, ductus thoracicusun direkt yaralanması, künt thorax travmasından veya thoraksta yapılan bir operasyondan sonra meydana çıkabilir.Spontan olarak meydana gelen bir chylothorax tam bir etyo- lojik izahla beraber esas hastalığın tedavisini icap ettirir. Konser- vatif tedavinin gayes” ductus thoracicus'taki yaralanma yerinin yapışarak kapanması ve normal chylus akımının teminidir. Mühim olan problem konservatif tedavinin süresinin tayinidir. Plevra ponksiyonu ile yapılan symptomatik bir tedavi süresi uzun olmamak şartı ile tavsiyeye şayandır.Cerrahi tedavi yöntemi olarak ductus thoracicusun yaralanma yerine ligatür konması başarı sağlamaktadır.
