<p>The lower facial profile, one of the factors that most significantly influences facial aesthetics, is closely related to the forward position of the upper jaw, and therefore the upper lip, in Class II Division 1 cases. In such cases, the reciprocal relationship between the lower and upper lips is disrupted. Consequently, the idea that the tongue-lip muscles are deteriorating at the expense of the lip muscles remained a dominant idea in orthodontics for many years (3). Tomes first pointed out in 1873 that the tongue and lips determine the position of the teeth. Similarly, it was thought that tooth alignment and the condition of the alveolar bones would develop under the opposing influence of the tongue and lip muscle forces (2). Subtelny (11) stated that in cases of tongue-lip balance disorders, the arch shape and tooth position during speech and swallowing are also affected by this condition.</p></trans-abstract>
