<p>This research evaluates the biochemical mechanisms of Rigor Mortis (post-mortem stiffening), moving beyond older theories of lactic acid coagulation. Drawing on the findings of Szent-Györgyi, the paper explains that muscle stiffening is primarily caused by the depletion of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) after oxygen supply ceases. In the absence of ATP, the protein complex actomyosin dehydrates and coagulates, leading to muscle rigidity. The author, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cahid Özen, discusses the sequence of stiffening, noting that it typically begins in the most active muscles first rather than simply the smallest ones. The paper emphasizes the significance of post-mortem molecular life and the role of potassium ions in muscle hydration.</p></trans-abstract>
