The Effect of Anxiety Level on Sedation Demand in Patients Scheduled to Undergo Endoscopy

Year 2019, Volume: 2 Issue: 1, 15 - 19, 31.01.2019

Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to evaluate whether anxiety levels affect the demand for sedo-analgesia in patients who will undergo endoscopy. A total of 200 patients who applied to the endoscopy unit for elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy / colonoscopy and who requested (Group I; n = 100) or not requested sedo-analgesia (Group II; n = 100) were included in the study. Anxiety levels were assessed by applying Beck Anxiety Inventory to each patient before being brought to the endoscopy room. The data for all of the 200 patients included in the study were collected. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in terms of demographic data except gender (p> 0.05). Gender distribution was 61 women and 39 men in Group I and 37 women and 63 men in Group II (p=0.001). The Beck Anxiety Inventory score [median (minimum-maximum)] was 7 (0-30) in Group I and 5.5 (018) in Group II and there was no statistically difference between the groups (p=0.268). There was also no statistically significant difference when anxiety levels were compared (p=0.101).In conclusions, we think that pre-procedural anxiety in patients with elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy has no effect on the demand for sedo-analgesia.

Endoskopi Uygulanacak Hastalardaki Anksiyete Düzeyinin Sedasyon İsteği Üzerine Etkisi

Year 2019, Volume: 2 Issue: 1, 15 - 19, 31.01.2019
