Abstract
Bookbinding is an art and has a valuable place in our culture. Such that this art has extant notorious masters and special techniques.
A protective cover has been made since the ancient times in order to prevent the disintegration of magazines or books, keep their pages together and ensure that they remain together without the deterioration of the page ranking. This protective cover is called “binding”. The word “binding” means “skin, cover” in Arabic.
Bookbinding emerged when a book took its current shape. Bookbinding started to develop when books which used to be in the shape of wad (roll) started to take the shape of codex (book) cut in a rectangular shape developed by the Romans.
The first Turkish bookbinding samples date back to the VI-IX century. The art of binding developed significantly after Turks’ adoption of Islam.
The art of bookbinding changed in time with the development of the techniques and technology in this field.
That the book came to be used widespread in Turkey brought about an irreversible change in the art of books. There are very good books written in Turkey. However most of them disappear in time with their content or are forgotten by being trapped in archives. It is necessary to protect, expand and develop the knowledge and resources about bookbinding.
