Identification of Urban Habitat Trees: Case of Ordu City Cemeteries

Abstract

Objective: With this study, it was aimed to determine the urban habitat trees in Ordu city center in cemeteries, to determine their spatial distribution, to reveal their health status and physical characteristics, and finally to create an "Urban Habitat Tree Database." Materials and Methods: The study was performed in 10 different urban cemeteries located in the city center of Ordu. Habitat trees were identified because of field studies: The cemetery where they are located has been examined in terms of trunk diameter, crown width, height, and micro-habitat structures they have, and the relationships between cemeteries have been revealed by statistical methods. Results: A total of 214 habitat trees, 23 exotic, and 191 natural species, with a trunk diameter of at least 40 cm were identified in 10 different cemeteries. The cemetery with the highest number of habitat trees is Sahincili Cemetery, with 88 habitat trees. The cemetery with the fewest habitat trees is the Karapinar Cemetery. In addition to these, 46 trees with a trunk diameter of at least 35 cm were identified and recorded as habitat tree candidates. Conclusion: With this study, which was conducted on the example of cemeteries in the Ordu city center, the importance of recording the information on habitat trees in urban areas in the database, keeping this information up to date and making it accessible to everyone has been revealed. With the inventory created, it will be possible for local governments and decision-makers to consider habitat trees in their planning studies.
