A Translation of the Treatise Entitled De Intellectu by Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh Ibn Rushd

Abstract

Averroes deeply influenced Latin scholastic thought with his commentaries on Aristotle. At the center of this influence was the thesis of the unity of intellect, based particularly on his Long Commentary on De anima, which sparked serious debates among 13th-century Christian thinkers. The treatise entitled De intellectu, attributed to Averroes’ son, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh, was also translated into Latin during the early stages of the debate, before 1240. Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh stated that his purpose in writing the treatise was to explain all the comprehensible ways and solid proofs that enable us to know greatest happiness, i.e., whether the active intellect unites with the material intellect whilst it is clothed with the body. Like Averroes, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh also points out that Aristotle left this question unexplained in his book De anima. The author bases his views on Averroes and states that the issue can be proven in three ways. While explaining these ways, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdallāh, who refers to important commentators such as Alexander of Aphrodisias and Themistius , also attempts to clarify the issue through certain methods, such as establishing an analogy between sense and intellect and the potentiality-actuality relationship. This study aims to present a Turkish translation of the treatise in question and to contribute to the literature on the Averroistic understanding of the intellect. The translation is based on the Latin text for two main reasons. First, the text’s influence on scholastic thought was shaped through its Latin translations; second, this Latin version contains philological differences from the only surviving Arabic manuscript.

Ebû Muhammed Abdullah İbn Rüşd’ün De Intellectu Adlı Risâlesinin Tercümesi

Abstract

İbn Rüşd, Aristoteles üzerine yazdığı şerhlerle Latin skolastik düşüncesini derinden etkilemiştir. Bu etkinin merkezinde, özellikle De anima’ya yazdığı büyük şerhine dayanan ve 13. yüzyıl Hristiyan düşünürleri arasında ciddi tartışmalara yol açan aklın birliği tezi yer almaktadır. İbn Rüşd’ün oğlu Ebû Muhammed Abdullah’a atfedilen De intellectu başlıklı risâle de tartışmanın erken dönemlerinde, 1240 yılından önce Latinceye tercüme edilmiştir. Ebû Muhammed Abdullah risâleyi yazma amacını en yüksek mutluluğu yani heyûlanî akıl bedende olduğu sürece faal aklın onunla ittisal edip etmediğini bilmemizi sağlayan bütün anlaşılır yolları ve sağlam kanıtları açıklamak olarak belirtmiştir. İbn Rüşd gibi Ebû Muhammed Abdullah da Aristoteles’in De anima kitabında bu soruyu açıklamadan bıraktığına işaret eder. Müellif, bu konudaki görüşlerini İbn Rüşd’e dayandır ve meselenin üç yol ile kanıtlanabileceğini ifade eder. Bu yolları açıklarken İskender Afrodisî ve Themistius gibi önemli şarihlere atıfta bulunan Ebû Muhammed Abdullah aynı zamanda duyu ile akıl arasında bir analoji kurma, kuvve-fiil ilişkisi gibi bazı yöntemler ile meseleyi açıklığa kavuşturmaya çalışır. Bu çalışma söz konusu risâlenin Türkçeye çevirisini sunmayı ve İbn Rüşdcü akıl anlayışı literatürüne katkı sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çeviri, iki temel nedenden ötürü Latince metin esas alınarak yapılmıştır. Birincisi, metnin skolastik düşünce üzerindeki etkisinin Latince tercümeleri üzerinden şekillenmesi; ikincisi ise bu Latince versiyonun, günümüze ulaşan tek Arapça nüshadan filolojik farklılıklar içermesidir.
