In this study, fibers obtained from poplar wood (Populus euramericana I-214) were modified with succinic
anhydride to improve the properties of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). To determine the optimum
modification parameters fibers were modified in different reaction temperatures (100, 120, 140 Co), reaction time
(30, 60, 90,120,150,180min.) and succinic anhydride ratio (25% and 50% based on weight of oven dry fibers). In
order to determine the optimum esterification conditions among the 36 variations weight percent gain, acid
value, saponification value, monoester, diester and total ester content of esterified fibers were determined. Also,
water repellent values were investigated. When the data were taken into account the optimal conditions for
succinic anhydride were defined as following: anhydride ratio 50% (based on weight of oven-dried fiber),
reaction temperature 120 Co and reaction time 90 min.
