Istanbul University Research Forest was managed as coppice until 1983. This forest has been under the
conversion of coppice stands to high forest since 1997. Stands which are on the lower slopes, have wet
and deep soil conditions are dominated by hornbeam (Carpinus betulus). Five hornbeam dominated
sample plots were taken. The effect of the coppice cutting (clearcutting) on the stand structure was
investigated by comparing the stand mixture according to the basal area and number of the trees on
clearcut and unclearcut at least for 40 years. Results indicate that coppice cutting is accelerated the
domination of hornbeam which has vegetative and generative competition advantage on the oaks
(Quercus frainetto). Economically valuable oak must be protected against the hornbeam and it must be
replaced by under planting and seeding on the hornbeam stands.
