Abstract

THE EFFECT AND CAUSALITY OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC POLICY UNCERTAINTY ON INFLATION BEHAVIORS OF G7 COUNTRIES

Year 2024, Volume: 12 Issue: 2, 1 - 31, 26.12.2024
https://doi.org/10.14514/beykozad.1322239

Abstract

After the epidemic period, inflation has increased all over the world with the recent increases in consumption, the deterioration in the global supply chain, and finally the Russian-Ukrainian occupation. However, in the markets where uncertainty is experienced, the society has been greatly affected both economically and financially. The aim of this study is to investigate the global policy uncertainty on inflation, which has an impact on the G7 countries. The results of the panel unit root tests and cross-section dependency tests applied for the purpose of the research reveal that the inflation values of these countries generally tend to return to the average despite fluctuations over time. This finding reflects the effects of economic integration and similar policy approaches by showing the existence of a convergence process in terms of inflation levels among G7 countries. Secondly, estimations made using the panel regression model show that increases in the global economic policy uncertainty index have negative effects on inflation. This shows that policy uncertainty in the global economic environment creates inflationary pressures and negatively affects economic stability. Finally, the direction of information flow between global economic policy uncertainty and inflation figures of developed countries was determined by the panel causality test. These tests show that global economic uncertainty can affect the inflation of developed countries.
