Determination of potassium pentaborate octahydrate production conditions

Abstract

Inorganic boron compounds are used in
construction, agriculture, cosmetics, textile, ceramic, nuclear energy,
military industry, electronics and automotive industry. In this study potassium
borate (xK2O.yB2O3.zH2O) which is
one of these inorganic borates was produced by using boric acid and potassium
hydroxide in aqueous medium. After specifying theoretical reaction conditions
required for chemical reaction, different B2O3/K2O
mixing ratios have been tried to obtain several products having different
purities. Obtained products are characterized by means of chemical analyses,
XRD and TG-DTA analyses and they are compared with original samples. Borax
decahydrate, borax pentahydrate, potassium chloride, carbonate and hydroxide is
used in conventional production technique of potassium pentaborate. In this
study it is obtained by using KOH and low sulfate boric acid which is a
commercial product of Eti Mine Works General Management in laboratory
environment.

Potasyum pentaborat oktahidrat üretim koşullarının belirlenmesi

Abstract

İnorganik bor bileşikleri, inşaat,
tarım, kozmetik, tekstil, seramik, cam, nükleer sanayi, askeri uygulamalar,
elektronik cihazlar ve otomotiv sektöründe kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada
inorganik boratlardan biri olan potasyum boratın (xK2O.yB2O3.zH2O)
sulu ortamda borik asit ve potasyum hidroksit kullanılarak üretimi
gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu amaçla tepkimenin meydana gelmesi için gerekli teorik
koşullar belirlendikten sonra farklı kütlesel B2O3/K2O
oranları denenerek optimum koşullar elde edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Elde edilen
ürünlerin kimyasal analizleri yapılarak, XRD’si ve TG-DTA’ları çekilerek yapıları
karakterize edilerek orijinal ürünlerle karşılaştırılmıştır. Geleneksel
yöntemle boraks dekahidrat, boraks pentahidrat, potasyum klorür, karbonat ve
hidroksitle üretilen potasyum pentaborat bu çalışmada KOH ile Eti Maden
İşletmeleri Genel Müdürlüğünün ticari ürünü olan düşük sülfatlı borik asit
kullanılarak laboratuvar ortamında üretilmiştir.
