Abstract

Jean Rhys’ın son romanı, Wide Sargasso Sea, genellikle feminist ve sömürgecilik-sonrası teorileri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Jean Rhys ’ın, bu romanda, doğanın görünen yüzünün ötesinde canlı bir ruhsal varlığa sahip olduğu inancını yansıttığını vurgulamaktır. Özellikle otobiyografisinde belirttiği gibi, Rhys dünyadaki tüm varlıkların daha büyük bir gücün yansıması olan bir ruh’a sahip olduklarına inanır. İnsan sevgisinin her türüne inancı, onun tanrıya olan inancının yerini alır. Bu inanış Wide Sargasso Sea’de de, Rochester’ın Victorian terbiyesinden dolayı bu mistik gerçeği kavrayamaması nedeni ile, Antoinette ve Edward Rochester’ın sonlarını hazırlayan temel çelişkiyi oluşturur. Rochester, püritan yetişme tarzından dolayı, Antoinette’in kendisine olan sevgisinin fiziksel tezahüründen ürktüğü için, bunu şehevi bir sevgi olarak değerlendirip ruhsal boyutunu göremez. Rochester’ın maddeci İngiliz gerçeği ile Antoinette’in Batı Hint Adalarındaki maneviyatçı hayatı arasındaki uyuşmazlık her ikisininde mutsuz olmalarına neden olur
