Bu çalışma, kültürel ve ulusal imgelerin dönüşümünde çevirmenler tarafından oynanan rolü Ahmet Midhat’ın Felâtun Bey ile Râkım Efendi adlı eserinin İngilizce çevirisi bağlamında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada ilk olarak eser üzerine yapılan yerli ve yabancı incelemelerdeki Tanzimat Dönemi Osmanlı imgesine ışık tutulacak ve bu incelemeden hareketle Tanzimat reformlarının Batılı düşünce ve yenilikleri taklit etme ve uyarlama sürecine dayandığı söyleminin Felâtun Bey ile Râkım Efendi’nin Türk toplumunda alımlanma sürecini nasıl etkilediği ortaya koyulacaktır. Daha sonra eserin İngilizce çevirmenlerinin Tanzimat’ı bir ‘çeviri’ süreci olarak gördüğünü vurgulayan yan metin ve metin dışı söylemleri incelenecek ve bu söylemler yoluyla Tanzimat Dönemi Osmanlı stereotiplerini (kalıp yargılarını) değiştirebilecek bir imgesel dönüşümün ortaya çıktığı belirtilecektir. Erek metin üzerinden Batı taklitçisi bir Osmanlı yerine yaratıcı bir Osmanlı imgesi çizen çevirmenlerin oynadıkları eyleyici role ışık tutan bu çalışmanın sonunda, çevirmenlerin hem çeviri sürecinde hem de alımlama sürecinde kültürel imgelerin dönüşümüne zemin hazırlayabileceği sonucuna varılmaktadır.
This study seeks to illustrate the important role played by translators in transforming the cultural and national images and in imagining collective identities. The study takes the English translation of the Tanzimat (reorganization) writer Ahmet Midhat’s Felâtun Bey ile Râkım Efendi as an exemplary case. The study will first focus on the existing narratives surrounding the self- and hetero-images of the Ottoman Empire, arguing that the framing of the Tanzimat reforms as a simple importation and a hybrid adaptation of the Western ideas and forms to local conditions shapes how Ahmet Midhat’s work has been received in the Turkish context. The study then moves on to analyze the paratextual, translational and extratextual strategies employed by the English translators of the work to argue that the translators’ move away from distortive binaries (e.g. East-West, Ottoman-European, and so forth) may help dissolve the stereotypes which pervaded both the Turkish and Anglophone contexts. Ultimately, the study points out that the English translators’ conceptualization of the Tanzimat period as one of translation in contrast to plain appropriation allows them to reframe the image of the Ottoman modern as a creative rather than an imitative cultural transformer, which in turn reveals how translators may exercise their agency during the translation and reception processes.
