<p>As detailed in theintroduction, cartoons are unique and valuable resources for studying the way asociety views certain phenomenon or professions. As popular mass media products, cartoons deal with a variety of subjects. In Turkey, where cartoons have a longand prosperous history, translation/interpreting and translators/interpretersare frequently portrayed as the subject or object of cartoons. The study startsout with an introduction outlining the definition and importance of cartoonsand their history, and this is followed by an analysis of cartoons in the mediareflecting translation/interpreting practices and translators/interpreters. Theaim of the study is, to study the notions of translation/interpreting andtranslator/interpreter inherent in Turkish society. Through a thematic analysisof a selective set of cartoons, the answer to certain questions have beenresearched such as, how well society understands the translators/interpreterswork, how far society is aware of certain professional realities. Inconclusion, it is clear that Turkish society has a relatively deepunderstanding of the profession and practice, including its difficulties, problems and key concepts. Though the depth of the cartoonists and the readersgrasp and perspective of the profession will differ from that of theprofessional, it is clear that both the profession and the professional are‘well-known’ by the end-user public.</p></trans-abstract>
