The concept of society has, throughout history, manifested itself in the spaces people inhabit. These places, which embody the phenomenon of living, are deeply shaped by the cultural dynamics of their communities and, over time, become integrated with them and their users. Religion—one of the fundamental forces uniting societies and molded by cultural influences—plays a key role in the creation of shared environments. In particular, places of worship serve as settings where individuals can experience personal and spiritual moments, while simultaneously nurturing collective interactions and social bonds. Churches, as spatial expressions of the Christian faith, leave diverse impressions on their users through their architectural styles; each style endows a building with a distinct character that illuminates historical processes and user experience alike. This study aims to examine the interior architectural details, ornamentation, and spatial identity of Saint Antoine Church in Istanbul, notable for its Neo-Gothic style. Adopting a qualitative case-study approach, the research thematically classifies its findings through content analysis, assessing the space in aesthetic, cultural, and symbolic terms. The results indicate that harmonious relationships among form, proportion, and material integrate architecture with visual narrative, while decorations reflecting both Eastern and Western influences reinforce the church’s intercultural role and provide a rich spatial experience. Ultimately, the study addresses the historical, artistic, and social value of Saint Antoine Church in a multi-layered manner, underscoring its significance.
Toplum kavramı, tarih boyunca insanların yaşadığı mekânları ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Yaşam olgusunu bulunduran mekânlar, toplumların kültürel dinamiklerinden derinden etkilenmekte ve kullanıcılarıyla birlikte zamanla toplumlara entegre olmaktadır. Din, toplumları birleştiren ve kültürel etkilerle şekillenen temel unsurlardan biri sayılmaktadır. İnanç yapısı, insan yaşamının ortak alanlarının oluşturulmasında önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Özellikle inanç mekanları, bireylerin kişisel ve manevi deneyimler yaşayabileceği ortamlar olarak hizmet vermektedir. Aynı zamanda toplum içindeki kolektif etkileşimleri ve bağlantıları teşvik etmektedir. Hristiyan inancının mekânlarından olan kiliseler, mimari üsluplarıyla kullanıcılarına çeşitli etkiler bırakmaktadır. Çalışma, İstanbul’da bulunan Neo-Gotik mimari üsluba sahip Aziz Antuan Kilisesi’nin (Saint Antoine) iç mekân mimari detayları, süslemeleri ve mekânsal kimliğini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Nitel araştırma kapsamında örnek olay yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. Bulgular, içerik analiziyle tematik olarak sınıflandırılmış ve mekân estetik, kültürel ve simgesel yönleriyle değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre; form, oran ve malzeme uyumu, mimari ile görsel anlatıyı bütünleştirirken, Doğu-Batı etkili süslemeler kilisenin kültürlerarası rolünü pekiştirmekte ve zengin bir mekânsal deneyim sunmaktadır. Araştırma, Aziz Antuan Kilisesi’nin tarihî, sanatsal ve toplumsal değerini çok katmanlı biçimde ele almakta ve bu değerlere ilişkin önemi vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır.
