Kent sosyolojisi alanının önde gelen isimlerinden Richard Sennett, modernite eleştirileri ve kamusal insan kavramsallaştırmasıyla literatürde özgün bir yere sahiptir. Mekân, otorite ve karakter üzerine çalışmalarıyla tanınan Sennett, bireyin modern dünyadaki konumunu tarihsel ve psikososyal bir perspektifle ele alır. Bu çalışma, kamusal alan kavramının teorik arka planını tartışarak, bu alana önemli katkılar sunmuş olan Sennett’in yaklaşımını incelemeyi amaçlar. Sennett’e göre, 19. yüzyılda kapitalist üretim ilişkileri ve sekülerleşmenin toplumsal hayata nüfuz etmesiyle birlikte mahremiyet kamusal yaşamın önüne geçmiş, kişilik kavramının ön plana çıkması birey dışı alanları kapsayan kamusal alanın çözülmesine yol açmıştır. Bu dönüşüm bireylerin ortak eylem yerine duygusal bağlara yöneldiği ve modern gemeinschaft (cemaat) biçimlerinin geliştiği bir sosyal yapı ortaya çıkarır. Kamusal alanın çözülmesiyle birlikte bireyler korunma ihtiyacıyla mahrem alana çekilir ve cemaat benzeri yapılar içinde aidiyet aramaya başlar. Mahremiyetin medeniyetle olan bağını sorgulayan Sennett, modern cemaat formlarının yıkıcı potansiyeline dikkat çekerek kamusal insanın yeniden inşasına yönelik düşünsel bir çağrı sunar. Çalışmanın literatüre özgün katkısı, Sennett’in teorik okumasını günümüz platform kamusallığı tartışmalarıyla ilişkilendirerek Türkiye bağlamındaki dijital cemaatleşme dinamikleri üzerinden somut örnekler sunması ve kamusal alanın dijital çağda yeniden tesisi için normatif öneriler getirmesidir.
Richard Sennett, one of the prominent figures in urban sociology, holds a distinctive place in the literature with his critiques of modernity and his conceptualization of the public man. Known for his studies on space, authority, and character, Sennett examines the position of the individual in the modern world through a historical and psychosocial perspective. This study aims to examine the approach of Sennett, who has made significant contributions to this field, by discussing the theoretical background of the concept of the public realm. According to Sennett, with the permeation of capitalist production relations and secularization into social life in the 19th century, intimacy took precedence over public life; the prominence of the concept of personality led to the erosion of the public realm, which encompasses impersonal domains. This transformation reveals a social structure where individuals gravitate towards emotional bonds rather than collective action, and where forms of modern gemeinschaft develop. With the dissolution of the public realm, individuals retreat into the private sphere out of a need for protection and begin to seek belonging within community-like structures. Questioning the relationship between intimacy and civility, Sennett draws attention to the destructive potential of modern community forms and offers an intellectual call for the reconstruction of the civic persona. The original contribution of this study to the literature lies in linking Sennett’s theoretical reading with contemporary debates on platform publicness, presenting concrete examples through digital community dynamics in the context of Türkiye, and offering normative proposals for the re-establishment of the public realm in the digital age.
