This article examines Gualtherus Hendrik Albert Juynboll’s assessments of ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars as presented in the entries he authored for the Encyclopaedia of Islam Second Edition (EI²) on al-S̲h̲aʿbī, S̲h̲uʿba b. al-Ḥad̲j̲d̲j̲ād̲j̲, al-Ṭayālisī, Muslim b. al-Ḥad̲j̲d̲j̲ād̲j̲, al-Tirmid̲h̲ī, al-Rāmahurmuzī and al-Mizzī . In this context the article aims to uncover the approach of a Western researcher toward ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars who have been influential in the field of ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars, as well as the fundamental motivations and determining factors behind this approach. In line with this objective the content provided by Juynboll for each ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars has been examined in detail. Particular attention has been given to how Juynboll’s explanations related to isnād analysis, such as the common link theory, are reflected in his assessments of ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars. The adequacy of the information he provides regarding the biographies and works of these scholars has been evaluated based on his methodological approach. The accuracy of the information he conveyed has been largely investigated. The research findings indicate that Juynboll presents biographical information on ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars that partially includes scholarly, social, personal, and political elements. It has been observed that Juynboll’s emphasis on the works of ḥadīt̲h̲ scholars is more pronounced compared to biographical details. Furthermore the effective role of the isnād analysis method has been identified in both biographical data and work-focused examinations.
