Abstract

Tarihçi Josephus’u önce Yahudiye’de Romalılara karşı mücadele eden ve Yahudilerin mağlubiyetinden sonra teslim olan bir komutan, sonra da Kudüs’ün yıkılmasından sonraki on yılda Roma’da yaşayıp Yunanca yazan bir aristokrat olarak görürüz. Yahudi Savaşı adlı eseri, hakkındaki eleştirilere rağmen en etkili Antik Batı metinleri arasında yer alır. Josephus Yahudi geleneklerini Greklerin retorik ve tarih yazımıyla harmanlar. Yedi bölüme ayrılmış eseri çok uzun metinlerden ve detaylardan oluşur. Anlatısında Yahudiye’nin Celile bölgesini Romalılara karşı müdafaa eden bir komutan, olayları çarpıtmadan yazdığını söyleyen bir tarihçi ve Yahudi kanun ve yasalarını iyi bilen bir din adamı olarak mağlup Yahudilerin başlarına gelen faciaların, Kudüs’ün ve Tapınağın yıkımının sorumlusu olarak Romalılardan çok dindaşlarını suçlar. Bu makalede Josephus’un bizzat askeri bir lider sıfatıyla iştirak ederek gözlem ve tespitler yaptığı Yahudi Savaşı adlı eseri üzerinden Roma İmparatoru Nero döneminde başlayıp İmparator Vespasian ve oğlu Titus dönemlerinde sona eren Kudüs kuşatması ile savaşının sebep ve sonuçlarını, tarihsel etkilerini söz konusu edeceğiz.

Al-Quds under Siege: The Jewish-Roman War through the Eyes of the Jewish Historian Josephus (66-73 AD)

Abstract

Josephus initially appears as a military commander who resisted the Romans in Judea, ultimately surrendering after the Jewish defeat. Later, he emerges as an aristocrat residing in Rome, writing in Greek during the decade following the fall of al-Quds. Despite its critics, his Jewish War remains one of the most influential texts of the ancient Western world. Josephus skillfully integrates Jewish traditions with Greek rhetorical and historical writing techniques. His work, organized into seven chapters, comprises extensive texts filled with intricate details. In his narrative, Josephus, writing as a former commander who defended Galilee, a historian professing objectivity, and a scholar well-versed in Jewish law, places the blame for the calamities that befell the Jews-and for the destruction of al-Quds and the Temple-primarily on his fellow Jews rather than on the Romans. This article examines the causes, consequences, and historical impact of the siege and war of al-Quds, which began under Roman Emperor Nero and concluded during the reigns of Emperor Vespasian and his son Titus. Through an analysis of Josephus’s Jewish War-a work informed by his personal involvement as a military leader and his detailed observationswe explore these critical events in depth.
