Aizanoi’dan Dört Mezar ve Düşündürdükleri

Abstract

Phrygia Epiktetos bölgesinin önemli merkezlerinden biri olan Aizanoi’un kent merkezinin yaklaşık 700m. güneydoğusunda 3. Derece Arkeolojik Sit alanında 2022-2023 yıllarında yapılan sondaj çalışmalarında açığa çıkarılan dört adet pişmiş toprak kiremit (stroter) mezar bu çalışmanın konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu makalede Aizanoi nekropolislerinde bugüne kadar yapılan arkeolojik çalışmalar hakkında genel bir bilgi verildikten sonra, yeni tespit edilen dört mezar tarihlenebilir buluntularıyla birlikte değerlendirilerek bilim dünyasına tanıtılmaktadır. Mezarların hepsi kremasyon gömü içermektedir ve içlerinden ele geçen çok sayıdaki demir raptiye ile çeşitli demir aksam ve çivi parçaları, dönemin gömü pratikleri hakkında birtakım öneriler getirmemize yardımcı olmaktadır. Mezar buluntuları içerisinde yer alan pişmiş toprak bulbous tipi unguentarium parçaları, bir pişmiş toprak bardak, iki Ephesos Tipi kandil ve bir bronz sikke ise mezarların tarihlenmesine olanak sağlamaktadır. Augustus dönemine işaret eden bu buluntular, mezarların da aynı döneme ait olduğunu göstermektedir. Burada değerlendirilen mezarlar, kentin güneydoğusunda bir gömü alanının daha bulunduğunu ve Augustus Döneminde kentin güneydoğu yönündeki sınırının en fazla ne kadar genişlemiş olabileceğini göstermesi açısından önemlidir.

Four Graves From Aizanoi and Their Implications

Abstract

This study focuses on four terracotta tile (stroter) graves uncovered during the 2022-2023 excavation works in the 3rd degree archaeological site area, approximately 700 meters southeast of the city center of Aizanoi, one of the important centers of the Phrygia Epiktetos region. After providing an overview of the archaeological research conducted in the necropolises of Aizanoi to date, this article introduces the newly discovered graves along with their datable findings to the scientific world. All the graves contain cremation burials, and numerous iron tacks and various iron fittings and nail fragments found within them help us propose some ideas about the burial practices of the period. The grave findings include fragments of terracotta bulbous type unguentarium, one terracotta cup, two Ephesian type lamps, and one bronze coin, which allow us to date the graves. These findings, pointing to the Augustan period, indicate that the graves also belong to the same period. The graves evaluated here are significant in showing that there is another burial area southeast of the city and indicating how much the southeastern boundary of the city may have expanded during the Augustan period.
