The declaration of the First Constitutional Monarchy on 23rd of December
1876 was a turning point in our
political history. However, the beginning of the period of Sultan II.
Abdülhamid in the same year and the following 33 years of his reign marked an important milestone in economic
terms. During his reign the Sultan took concrete economic actions and
industrialization efforts accelerated drastically in his time. First, trade and
industry chambers were established with the aim to develop trade and production.
As a result, the Dersaadet (Istanbul)
Chamber of Commerce was established in 1882 and started to realize
its activities. One of the important
tools of the Chamber in this context was the Chamber's own newspaper. The
newspaper published news about economy, trade, new sectors and investment opportunities, thus enabling
merchants to be aware of all kinds of developments. This article examines the
economic development in the Ottoman Empire in the light of the news presented
in the Dersaadet (Istanbul) Chamber of
Commerce newspaper. Thus, although only
a limited period has been covered, this article analyzes for the very first
time how the Turkish private sector saw and evaluated the economic developments
in Turkey
