Tarihte bireyin rolüne ilişkin bazı çalışmalarda, tarihin özünde nesnel süreçlerin ürünü olduğu ve bireyin, ancak tarihi olayların vuku bulması öncesindeki nicel birikimlerin artık nitel bir dönüşüme yol açacakları esnada bir tür sebep veya hızlandırıcı gibi göründüğü yönündedir. Bir başka bakış açısı ise tarihte bireyin, daha doğrusu kahramanların başat konumda oldukları ve önemli roller ifa etmek suretiyle tarihin yönünü ve seyrini etkiledikleri iddiasındadır. Her iki bakış açısının doğruluklarına ilişkin pek çok kanıt getirilebilir, Türk siyasal hayatı ekseninde, tarihte bireyin rolü hususunda dikkat çekici ve önemli bir sima olan Süleyman Demirel’in siyasi hayatının ilk devresi hakkında kaleme alınan bu çalışmada, Türk siyasi hayatının iki önemli kilometre taşından bir olan 27 Mayıs 1960 darbesi sonrası ile 12 Mart 1971 muhtırası öncesindeki olaylar, iç ve dış dinamiklerin karşılıklı etkileşimleri çerçevesinde çözümlenmeye, olayların gelişiminde Süleyman Demirel’in oynadığı rolün belirleyiciliği ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır
In some works regarding the role of individual in history the general understanding tends to be shaped by the fact that history is the product of objective processes, in essence, and the invidiual seems to be only a kind of cause or accelerator during the moment quantitative accumulation leads to a qualitative transformation prior to the occurrence of historical events. Another point of view argues that the individual, the hero to put it more correctly, is the dominant character and affects the direction and course of history by performing important roles. Much evidence can be put forward regarding the legitimacy of both points of views; within the axis of the Turkish political life, this study focuses on the first phase of the political life of Süleyman Demirel as a remarkable and improtant character in terms of the role of individual within history. The events aftermath of the 27 May 1960 coup d'etat, which is one of the two milestones of the Turkish political life, and before the 12 March 1971 memorandum were analyzed within the framework of reciprocal interaction of domestic and foreign dynamics and the role of Süleyman Demirel as determinant was put forward
