Efficacy of Polishing Materials in same size applied by Air-Flow and Rubber Cup on Surface Roughness

Year 2009, Volume: 36 Issue: 1 - Volume: 36 Issue: 1, 15 - 21, 01.02.2009

Abstract

The present in vitro study aimed to evaluatethe efficacy of two polishing materials in reducingtooth roughness caused by sonic scaling. Buccaltooth surface areas of extracted, distile water stored24 mandibular incisor teeth were scaled in a buccolingual direction by a sonic scaler. The resultingroughness was measured by a profilometer. Thespecimens were then splint into two groups. One ofthese groups was polished by an air-powder instruments and the other was polished by rubber cup andprophylaxis paste. Tooth roughness Ra wasrecorded for each step in the procedures. In bothgroups Ra values were not significantly reduced ateach step of the polishing procedures and the terminal results was similar for the groups.Prophylaxis paste and air-powder polishing gave asimilar reduction of the sonic scaling roughness
