Peripheral Ossifyineg Fibroma: Clinical and Histopathological evaluation of 50 Cases

Year 2005, Volume: 32 Issue: 1 - Volume: 32 Issue: 1, 1 - 7, 01.02.2005

Abstract

The peripheral ossifying fibroma is a reactivefocal overgrowth occuring on the gingiva. Theetiology of this gingival overgrowth is uncertain, but periodontal ligament origin has been suggested. The peripheral ossifying fibroma exhibits a peakincidence between the second and third decade.Females are affected more frequently. The anteriormaxillary region is the most common localizationfor the peripheral ossifying fibroma. Well-defined,solitary mass may be ulcerated. The histologicalappearance of peripheral ossifying fibroma ischaracterized by highly cellular connective tissueand randomly dispersed foci of calcifications. Aseries of 50 cases of peripheral ossifying fibromawas analyzed both clinically and histologically. As aconclusion, the lesions that have different clinicalfeatures also show different histomorphologicalfeatures
